Knife-toter told to live way from Chch
A man who went berserk, and produced a knife in the dock of the No. 1 courtroom while awaiting sentence on driving while disqualified offences, was ordered to live away from Christchurch.
Bernard Allan Hill, aged 25 (Mr A. N. D. Garrett) was appearing for sentence on three charges of driving while disqualified, and the unlawful possession of a knife in the No. 1 courtroom on February 8.
“The only reason I am refusing to send you to prison is because of the contents of the psychiatric report,” the Judge said. On the driving offences the Judge disqualified Hill for a further 12 months. “This means that you are now off the road until May 13, 1986,” he said. On the last of the disqualified driving offences committed in October, 1983, Hill was given a 12-month deferred sentence.
He was also put on probation for 18 months with the special conditions that he reside away from the Christchurch area unless permitted to by the probation officer, and is to live and work where directed by the officer.
Hill was handcuffed when he appeared in the dock. Mr Garrett said Hill intended travelling to the North Island to live and work on a church-sponsored project.
