Seoul amnesty planned

NZPA-Reuter Seoul A South Korean Cabinet Minister says that the Government will unconditionally release all students still being held for anti-Govem-ment activity. The Education Minister, Mr Kwon E Hyock, told a meeting of university and college chiefs that the students could return to their studies as soon as the necessary legal procedures were complete. . He did not say how many students were affected, but at least 200 are believed to be in jail still, after being arrested at anti-Govem-ment campus demonstrations last year. The act of leniency is the latest announced by the Government of Mr Chun Doo Hwan. On Saturday it lifted a ban on political activity from 202 politicians and dissidents, although nearly 100 remain banned.

In December, the Government said that more than 1360 suspended students would be reinstated in the term beginning next month. It freed more than 100 jailed students in a Christmas amnesty.
