Lords’ seat for Macmillan

A former British Prime Minister, Sir Harold Macmillan, took his seat in the House of Lords yesterday as the first Earl of Stockton.

The Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, and 300 friends attended the 10-min-ute ritual in which ‘Supermac,” as he was known in office, donned a bright red cloak and swore allegiance to the Queen. Lord Stockton, who was granted an earldom by the Queen on his 90th birthday on February 10, took his title from the first constituency he represented as a Conservative member of Parliament in the House of Commons, in 1924.

Lord Stockton served as Prime Minister from 1957 to 1963.
