Replacement bids

For the second time in two days Christchurch Festival organisers have had to cancel one of their main five international events. Illness has caused the French piano duo, the Labeque Sisters, to cancel their New Zealand tour and their Christchurch Festival concert. One of the sisters is in hospital in Paris and complete rest has been prescribed after her hospital discharge within a few days. On Tuesday the festival organisers announced the cancellation of the concert by the Widespread Jazz Orchestra, from New York. The group’s Australian tour, which was to have preceded its appearance in Christchurch, had fallen through, and the group decided not to, come to New Zealand.

The Labeque Sisters, the Widespread Jazz Orchestra, the Coldstream Guards, Molissa Fenley and the Actors Touring Company were the five big international events for the festival.

A special entertainment card package for the five events had been organised at a discount price.

Katia and Marielle Labeque are internationally recognised and have toured Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Australia. They were to have given two festival concerts, one with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra on March 10, and a second, unaccompanied, on March 11.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s publicity officer, Ms Sari Bensch, said the orchestra hoped to engage a replacement artist

or artists. The Labeque Sisters were to have completed a five-concert tour with the orchestra and a further four recitals with the Music Federation. The March 10 Christchurch concert by the orchestra would definitely go ahead, she said. The Christchurch Festival events manager, Mr John Page, said that the orchestra would help to provide a replacement artist for the festival concert. It was hoped an artist could be

found, either from New Zealand or overseas, by Monday or Tuesday. Patrons would be given the choice of refunding their tickets to the Labeque concert or exchanging them for the replacement concert. The festival organisers have already had one offer of a replacement duo. The Topp Twins have offered to perform as the La Topp Sisters and were yesterday practising their skills on the keyboard.
