Upper Cut sharp in sprint trial
By
J. J. BOYLE
Upper Cut will be back to sprinting at the Geraldine meeting next Tuesday. He showed he had freshened well since his fifth behind Clansman over 2000 m at
Riccarton last month by sprinting keenly in training on the plough on his home track yesterday. Ridden by his race rider, Judy Hawes, Upper Cut sprinted 800 m in 51.85, the final 600 m in 37.65.
Shardak, one of Upper Cut’s rivals in the Ross Smith Handicap at Orari, finished clear of Divine Flo over 800 m, and returned 52.25, the last 600 m in 38s. Five Over Five, an accep-
tor for the Seadown Handicap, first leg of the Geraldine double, recorded lmin 34s for 1400 m, and 40.4 s for the final 600 m.
Harbor Flo shaped as if she could have bettered her 40.5 s for 600 m. Her stablemate, Arnie Annie, was paired with Krysia to run 600 m in 38s. Chiasso, a last-start winner for John Bourne's stable, picked up speed steadily from the 800 m, and finished with 600 m in 38.25. Valentino followed in 38.85.
The Wingatui-trained Noble Boa was given striding work before being flown to Wellington later in the morning.
