Post Office charges

Sir,—Chris Chaston’s figures on Post Office charges are inaccurate. To telephone Wellington (full rate) and speak for a full hour would cost $42 whereas flying to Wellington would cost $7B for one way. Any profit made was spent on new equipment to improve services, the advantages of which the correspondent probably already enjoys. If the profit had not been made, the Post Office would be berated as a drain on the taxpayer’s pocket because funds for new equipment would have to be found from the public purse. A decrease in charges would only be sensible if the price of everything, including food and clothing, came down.—Yours, etc.,

A. R. BARLOW. February 24, 1984.
