Bonanza for farmers

Following two years of drought, the present season has been a bonanza for local farmers, according to the president of the Kaikoura A. and P. Association, Mr Brian Seddon, who is now in his second term. Mr Seddon and his wife, Dorothy, farm at “Acacia Downs,” just south of the Kowhai River, near Kaikoura. Their 590 ha property winters 5000 Drysdale sheep, 200 head of cattle and supports a South Suffolk stud.

The Seddons have farmed this property for 21 years of the 26 they have lived in the district, improving the stocking ratio from 1200 sheep and 70 head of cattle when they took over. Mr and Mrs Seddon share an active interest in community affairs, with Brian having served terms as president of the Kaikoura Golf Club and Lions club, deputy chairman of the Marlborough Catchment

Board and chairman of the Fernleigh Rural Water Supply. He also has a keen interest in sport and is an active golfer. Dorothy is at present secretary of the Tecorians, vice president of Red Cross, and has served as president of the Plunket Association, treasurer of Play Centre and president of the Tecorians. The Seddons have four children: Nick is mustering in the district, Brigit is nursing at Princess Margaret Hospital, Richard works on the farm and Annabelle is in her thirdform year at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.
