More money for Maori awards
PA Wellington The Government is doubling its contribution to the Ngarimu V.C. scholarship fund, which makes annual awards to outstanding Maori students. The Government funding will be raised to $16,000. The extra money will increase from six to 10 the number of students a year selected for the scholarships at universities or technical institutes. It will also assist in increasing the value of the award by $2O a year, to $630. There are 23 students receiving the scholarship. A further 10 have been selected.
The scholarship fund was set up in 1945 by the Government in recognition of the service of the Maori people, especially that of
the 28th (Maori) Battalion in World War II and the award of the Victoria Cross to Second-Lieutenant Te Moananui a Kiwa Ngarimu, the first Maori to win the V.C.
The 10 scholarship winners for 1984 are Renata James Baker (Mangere East), Stephen Daryl Kara (Kelston), Trevor Lance Robb Tait (Glenfield), Bradley Dominic Rossi (Glenfield), Wayne Tainui Tukiri (Pakuranga), Sam Hamana Tiakiwai (Opotiki), Tangimoana Frances Habib (Eastbourne), Wikitoria Katerina Te Iwingaro Puriri (Whangarei), Edward Tekanawa Douglas (Hamilton), and Jennifer Margot Jacob (Levin). A post-graduate scholarship, of $4OOO, was made to Margaret Shirley MutuGrigg, of Onehunga.
