China-N.Z. trade urged

PA Wellington China’s expertise in making hydro-electricity equipment could contribute to balancing its trade with New Zealand, according to an association set up to promote business between the two countries.

The chairman of the New Zealand China Trade Association, Mr C. B. Stan-

worth, said that there could be several million dollars worth of extra sales of this type of equipment to New

Zealand between now and the early 19905. He said if this newly identified capability could be added to other opportunities such as more use by New Zealand industry of Chinese lathes, hoists, electric motors, bulldozers, shovellers, logging machinery, and cutting and sawing equipment, many millions of dollars worth of additional

imports could be achieved. Trade between the two countries this year will be worth more than $230 million — about $lBO million in New Zealand exports and $5O million in Chinese exports. The 60-member association recently launched a membership drive to increase trade between the two countries.
