1000 new jobs gained
About 1000 new factory jobs were gained in Christchurch in the four years to March, 1983, according to a City Council survey. People employed in 953 new factories opened during those years totalled 4294, compared with the loss of 3216 jobs in the 880 factories that closed.
Planning figures showed that both Bromley and Woolston gained about 20 new factories.
Most new factories (109 openings, compared with 58 closings) were opened in the Hornby area. Cr M. J. Glubb told the council’s town-planning committee yesterday that such figures showed real progress was being made in spite of the economic slump. "We have got more than our fair share of knockers and Jeremiahs and prophets of doom in Christchurch,” he said.
Cr Geoff Stone said the increase in jobs sounded impressive on its own, but it was over four years and had to be compared with the extent of the demand for jobs from school leavers.
