No rebel tour next year

NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg

South Africa is unlikely to stage another rebel cricket tour next season but plans more such tours in the future, said the president of the South African Cricket Union, Mr Joe Pamensky, yesterday. ~ Mr Pamensky said it was necessary to concentrate on the domestic programme for a season or two.

“But obviously tours by teams of the standard of our West Indian friends will feature strongly in our future plans,” he said. South Africa has spent large sums of money to try to sidestep international sporting boycotts, imposed because of its apartheid policy, by inviting rebel teams willing to risk sanctions in their own countries and elsewhere.
