Tribe in land protest

,PA Auckland About 14 members of the Ngati-paoa tribe yesterday pitched tents on a 960 ha Waiheke Island farm they claim belongs to the tribe, and declared they would stay until evicted or the Government agreed to vest the land in the tribe. The Maori Affairs Department decided to lease the land to a Maori farmer, Mr George Evans, and his two sons, and lend him 5400,000 at 7.5 per cent interest a year as part of the agreement, the “New Zealand Herald” newspaper reported. The lease begins today, the newspaper said.

The department says the fend was sold by a Ngatipaoa owner to the Crown in 1858. It had been sold to private interests and changed hands six times before the Crown bought it back in the 1970 s when the part-Maori owner asked to be bought out. The land was held in trust for Maori settlement.

Mr Evans, says the department, is a Maori farmer and has family connections with the Ngati-paoa tribe.
