Group on unlawful assembly charges
No pleas were entered yesterday by 11 men facing charges relating to an incident near the Ferry Road headquarters of the Devil’s Henchmen motor-cycle gang on Sunday morning. Each defendant was remanded by Judge McAloon in the District Court to February 3. Bail was opposed for 10 of the men by Sergeant G. G. Cleland. After a hearing in Chambers the defendants were each granted bail of $l5OO.
Ten of the accused are charged with being members of an unlawful assembly intent on conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause persons in the neighbourhood to fear that violence would be used against them. They are: Steven Charles Anqetil, aged 24, a mechanic; Kenneth Arnold Averis, aged 27, a traffic
operator, Graham Roy Averis, aged 27, a carpenter; Christopher Peairs Chambers, aged 27, unemployed; Bryan Robert Darrell, aged 26, a tool setter; Peter Ronald Darrell, aged 28, unemployed; Steven Wayne Morrison, aged 22, unemployed; Rex Anthony Underhay, aged 27, an engineer; Vaughan Martin Watson, aged 22, a coach builder; and Rex Bruce White, aged 26, a beneficiary. The Darrell brothers were represented by Mr M. J. Glue. Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon acted for the others. Peter John McClure, aged 27, unemployed, was remanded at large to February 3 without plea on a charge of intentionally damaging two gates, the property of Johannes Hendrick Veroint. Bail was not opposed for this defendant.
