Upsets in junior games
Upsets marked the resumption of play in the premier grade of “The Press’’ junior tennis competitions at Wilding Park on Saturday. The dominent team in the 17 years girls’ division, Elmwood, conceded defeat for the first time this season when it was nosed out by St Martins on a countback of games. In the 17 years boys’ section, the previously unbeaten Burwood side was outdistanced by Elmwood, which is now showing the way to Edgeware at the top of the points table. In spite of their defeat, the Elmwood girls still lead their division.
Results on Saturday were:— Boys. — Halswell 5, St Ninians 1; Edgeware 6, Avonhead 0; Elmwood 6, Burwood 0; Cashmere 5, Fendalton 1. Girls. — St Martins 62 games, Elmwood 53; Shirley 5, Edgeware 1; Bishopdale 5, Te Kura 1; Fendalton 6, North Linwood 0. Points are:— Boys. — Elmwood 39, Edgeware 35, Burwood 32, Cashmere 29, Halswell 24, Fendalton 19, St Ninians 8, Avonhead 6. Girls. — Elmwood 42, St Martins and Fendalton 32, Bishopdale and Shirley 24, Edgeware 22, North Linwood 15, Te Kura 1.
