Will he or won’t he?

NZPA-Reuter Washington President Ronald Reagan will announce today (N.Z. time) whether he will seek re-election this year. Top White House aides, Republican Party officials and leaders of Reagan’s long-established re-election committee are treating as a mere formality his live, five-minute television appearance in the White House Oval Office. A decision to seek another four-year term would launch the Republicans into the 1984 campaign in smooth and unified shape while the oppositon Democrats fight out an eight-way nomination race, now led by Walter Mondale. A “no” decision by Mr Reagan would leave the Republicans thunderstruck and could touch off a war of succession among the VicePresident, Mr George Bush, several other leading moderates and hard-core Right-wing candidates.
