Missile fired at U.S. helicopter
NZPA-AP Beirut United States Navy jets took to the air yesterday after a ground-to-air missile was fired at an American helicopter over the United States Marines’ base at Beirut Airport, Lebanon’s State Radio reported. The missile missed its mark. Beirut Radio said formations of Fl 4 Tomcat interceptors scrambled off United States aircraft carriers in Lebanese waters
on reconnaissance runs over' Beirut a few minutes after the missile was fired at mid-morning. The official radio gave no details about the missile incident. The missile incident was reported as the United States Middle East envoy, Mr Donald Rumsfeld, and Mr Richard Murphy, Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East affairs, were meeting President Amin Gemayel of Lebanon, the State Radio reported.
