Bookmakers warned

PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, yesterday suggested a crackdown on bookmakers.

Addressing the Asian Racing Conference in Auckland, Sir Robert said that bookmakers worked illegally in most New Zealand hotels. “Betting in bars does nothing for racing as a sport and returns nothing to the State or clubs by way of tax,” he said. “I think it is time we had a chat to the new Commissioner of Police (Mr K. O. Thompson), about this matter and without making any kind of promise at all I think it is time we had a look at it because it is good neither for those who participate nor for the racing industry.”
