Car off 25m cliff
A young Kaikoura couple had a lucky escape from serious injury when their car plunged over a 25m cliff early on Saturday. The accident is thought to have happened about 3 a.m. The car came to rest in the bed of the Hapuka River, about 12km from Kaikoura. The Kaikoura police said that the husband managed to free himself from the wreckage and was then able to drag his wife from the car. The man then clambered up the cliff and was able to flag down a passing Kaikoura County Council truck about 9.30 a.m. Emergency services were called and. a rescue team carried the injured woman 300 metres along the riverbed to where an ambulance was waiting. Both persons were reported in a satisfactory condition last evening in Kaikoura Hospital suffering from cuts and bruises. The woman has a broken leg. Their names had not been released by the Kaikoura police last evening.
