Three film scenes will be removed
PA Wellington Three gruesome death scenes will be cut from the film, “Class of 84,” and an R2O rating given, before it will be shown in New Zealand. The Films Censorship Board of Review decided that the three scenes; an explicit killing on a circu-lar-saw bench, an explicit killing of a gang member in a petrol fire, and subsequent shots of his face, and the final two close-up shots of a hanging, were injurious to the public good. A company, 20th Century Fox Distribution, had asked the board to review a deci-
sion by the film censor. The chairman of the board of review, Mr J. M. Priestley, said that the film concentrated to a marked extent on anti-social behaviour among high school students, and violence. It was a well-produced, intense and fast-moving drama with over-all thematic integrity, he said. Most of the board agreed there was no need to cut until the last reel and with an RlB or R2O classification it would not be injurious to the public good. The three scenes to be cut are in the last reel.
