Children and guns

Sir,—Why are hand guns made illegal? The answer is simple — they make killing so easy, whether the trigger is pulled by an adult or child. No-one has ever denied the dreadful carnage on our roads, but let us take your correspondent’s line of thought to its logical and ludicrous conclusion. A comparison can be made with a carload of reckless and inconsequential passengers speeding down our city streets with imminent danger of an appalling accident. Now consider the same group firing sports guns at all and sundry as they go. Which group has the greater potential for killing? Surely, the group with both car and guns. Soldiers are not armed with shanghais. I have never denied that “people kill people,” but it can be done so much more speedily and effectively with a gun of any kind than with such a weapon as the “kitchen poker.” Why teach our youngsters the art of murder? — Yours, etc.,
