Dogs on beaches

Sir,—l have read with interest the letters about dogs on beaches, and wonder why nobody has mentioned the effect they have on children who are frightened of dogs. To go for an outing to a beach or perhaps Spencer Park and have a child refuse to get out of a car because there is a dog in the area is no fun. I know from personal experience when my children were young that no amount of talking will convince them that the dog will not hurt them. A dog near children playing will usually go over to them to play too, but the child’s reaction, usually a scream and a mad dash for something high to climb, only makes the dog more playful. Dog owners should have a leash handy to put on their pet when near children. Not all children love dogs.—Yours, etc., D. JONES. January 18, 1984.
