Park, Albans final
Lancaster Park, last year’s winner, will play St Albans in the final of the Atlantic and Pacific Canterbury club knock-out cricket competition. True to form, the Lancaster Park team waited until almost the last minute to clinch victory at Hagley Oval yesterday. It was set a target of 141 by Sydenham, and with the last over remaining, needed four runs to win. Bob Cusdin, the mainstay of the innings, punched the first ball from Bob Carter hard down the wicket, only to
have it swiftly fielded, but he had his revenge. He lofted the next ball high over both bowler and boundary for six. Cusdin, who was unbeaten on 63, was aided by Graeme Kench (29) and Stu Cameron (20).
Kevin Congdon, who made 62, was the top scorer for Sydenham.
St Albans’ win against Sumner was more clear-cut. It won the toss and batted, with Andy Nuttall, who played some handsome offdrives, making 35, and Lvn
Sparks, 31, For a total of 176.
It proved to be Nuttall’s day, for he then earned the impressive bowling figures of 5/39 as Sumner collapsed to 108.
Tony McKendry, who had already taken two St Albans wickets, compiled 31 and George Nicoll 29 but Sumner had lost too many wickets too early. Scores:—
St Albans 176 (A. J. Nuttall 35, L. C. Sparks 31, M. W. Priest 27, G. B. Smith 22; D. Boreham 3/40, R. Campbell 3/ 39, A. McKendry 2/26) beat Sumner 108 (A. McKendry 31, G. Nicoll 29; Nuttall 5/39, Priest 2/10).
Sydenham 141/9 (K. C. Congdon 62, G. Gardiner 22; G. C. Bateman 3/29, T. E. Luke 2/36) lost to Lancaster Park 144/8 (R. L. Cusdin 63 not out, G. L. Kench 29, S. D. Cameron 20; M. J. Dolden 3/ 34, P. D. Lublow 2/49).
