Memory moves through unbeaten

Arnold Memory (Woolston W.M.C.), who has an excellent record in Christchurch centre bowls events as a skip, showed his ability at singles at the week-end by being the last two-lifer in the open singles. Memory will be joined by nine one-lifers when the tournament resumes at Linwood on Wednesday and they are Bill McDonald and Roger Norton (both Spreydon), Sandy Keith (Hinds), Eric Bell and Frank Carter (both Fendalton), Ken Watson (Linwood), Lyn Hanger (Burnside), Bernie Johns (Christchurch) and Malcolm McLeod (Cashmere). McDonald, Hanger, and Johns are all previous winners of this event, while Carter has been a cham-pion-of-champions singles titleholder.

Memory had a tougher time getting through the first flair rounds on Saturday than he had in the

second four yesterday. His Saturday results included 21-19 against a former winner, Wally Wilkinson (Beckenham), 21-20 against Jim Abernethy (Woodend) and 21-17 against Stan Batcheler (Burwood). Yesterday he had just the one tight game, against Murray Hibbard (Linwood). The pressure was not off Memory until he scored a four on the third-to-last end to take a 20-15 lead.

Keith, who has an impressive singles record in the Ashburton area, will have the longest distance to travel on Wednesday, but on his form yesterday the trip may not be in vain. He played very well in both his last two games to beat Robin Howman (Burnside) and John Gill (Papanui) respectively. The best prospect among the one-lifers might be Johns. He fias in fine touch yes-

terday and overcame a big hurdle in the last round when he beat Graham Stanley (South Brighton) 21-14. Results from the sixth round on:— Sixth round Two-lifers M. Hibbard (Linwood) 21, R.
