Aust, prices down
NZPA Sydney Share price rises were trimmed back in late trading on Australian share markets showing some nervousness in what brokers called a thin local market. However the all-ordin-aries and industrial indices continued to set records on small rises.
Brokers said much of yesterday’s turnover was twoway business through brokers’ overseas offices, with buying strength noted from Europe where investors had ordered quality stocks.
The all ordinaries was up 1.5 points at 787.9, due to the 3.1 point rise by the all industrials to 1023.3, while the all resources added 0.3 to 600.8. BHP added 5c to 1445, CSR rose 2c to 438, ANZ Bank added 12c to 620 and Westpac added 7c to 397. Golds eased. Poseidon fell 15c to 450 and Central Norseman 10c to 60 while GMK went against the trend with a 20c rise to 1020.
Copper stocks tended softer on the lower physical prices with CRA off 8c to 608.
MIM fell 2c to 388 but WMC rose 2c to 440. Reni-
son added 15c to 440 and E.Z. 10c to 640.
Oil and gas issues were mixed, with Ampol Exploration up 10c at 410, while AOD, Bridge and Beach recorded small gains.
ERA firmed 3c to 178. Brewers firmed with Castlemaine Toohey up 10c to 560.
Transporters firmed while building suppliers eased with James Hardie down 10c to 380. Retailers were mixed with Myer up 8c at 223 but Woolworths down 2c to 270.
