Akaroa toilets
Sir,—Your correspondent, J. M. Archie, expresses strong views about the state of Akaroa public toilets detracting from tourists’ enjoyment. But does Akaroa want tourists? My impression is that part of the population definitely opposes tourism for the town, and wishes it to be a sleepy hollow. Another part is actively promoting tourism, but is thwarted by the opposition. Twice during this" holiday I tried to visit “The Gallery,” but it was closed. No longer is there the attraction of fish sales on the wharf. Please, will the town get itself together and decide which sort of town it is to be? This half-and-half attitude is not attractive. — Yours, etc., PETER MEREDITH. January 6, 1984.
Sir,—l fully endorse J. M. Archie’s letter about Akaroa toilets. We also took overseas visitors there, and I was appalled at the conditions. In fact, it is the worst public toilet I have ever seen.— Yours, etc., M. T. MOLLOY. January 6, 1984’.
