Focus on students’ jobs

Summer unemployment problems faced by university students will be explained to lunchtime crowds in Cathedral Square tomorrow. The newly established unemployed student centre at the University of Canterbury has organised a threehour “Unemployed Focus Day” in the Square as part of the Summer Times holiday programme.

A local band, Out of Order, will start playing at noon. Other items are a dance group performance and five speakers from the New Zealand University Students’ Association, the Federation of Labour, the Canterbury Trades Council, the Social Welfare Department, and the Unemployed Workers’ Collective. The centre’s co-ordinator,

Ms Robyn Mclntyre, said the day was to make people aware of unemployment, particularly for tertiary students. Another aim was to let students themselves know about the centre, funded by the Canterbury Students’ Association, which acted as an advice bureau for those without jobs from the campus base it-shared with Student Job Search.
