Ban on Square traffic
Motorists were asked yesterday to respect the renewed Friday evening ban on private vehicle access to the north-eastern sector of Cathedral Square. The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, said that pressure caused by traffic and drivers trying to park in that part of the Square was likely to be worse at this time of year. “The council feels that there is sufficient activity caused by buses and pedestrians without the extra
pressure caused by general vehicular access,” he said. The access ban applies to motor-cycles as well as other vehicles. Only buses and taxis are allowed to enter the north-eastern sector of the Square from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays. Ministry of Transport officers will enforce the ban, and council parkingenforcement officers will be in the Square as usual on Fridays until 7.30 p.m. The “No Entry” sign will be left switched on over the
Colombo Street entrance to the Square until 9 p.m. Private traffic will not be allowed to enter from the north. Entry from the east is already banned by the “No Right Turn” sign where Worcester Street meets the Square at the rear of Christchurch Cathedral. Sir Hamish said that motorists could help make that part of Cathedral Square a more pleasant place for people by respecting the signs.
