Surprise without a name
A llama lamb about two hours old rests with his mother, Jill, after his surprise birth at Orana Park yesterday afternoon.
The lamb is the first llama born at the park and had not been expected for another six weeks or more. The director of the park, Mr Paul Garland, said that the lamb was a full-term one and “as bright as a button.”
Jill and her lamb’s father, Jack, were acquired from the Auckland Zoo earlier this year. Jack and Jill were shorn for the first time on Monday, but Mr Garland said that this had not induced the birth.
“It was just a coincidence,” he said.
The lamb was on show at the park from the beginning of his life; a family who had decided on impulse to visit the park yesterday watched his birth.
The lamb has not yet been named. Mr Garland said that the park would run a holiday competition for children to find an appropriate name.
