Offer passed to Canty
PA Wellington An invitation for the Canterbury rugby team to play three matches in South Africa in March was tabled at the council meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union in Wellington yesterday. The invitation, issued by the Western Province union through the South African Rugby Board, will be passed on to the Canterbury Rugby Union for their decision. The chairman of the N.Z.R.F.U., Mr Ces Blazey, said the council followed normal procedure in passing on the invitation.
“After usual requirements are met, such as finance, suitable time of year to travel and the like, it is our custom to pass on to individuals or teams any such invitation,” he said. “We are being consistent by doing so. If we had declined to pass on the invitation to Canterbury we would not have been approving the tour. “As it is, it is not our decision to accept or refuse the invitation,” he said. The president of the Canterbury union, Mr M. R. Barnett, could not be contacted for comment last evening.
