Participants in the system will obtain label, card printout and microfiche products via online requests. Titles are constantly added to the database from MARC tapes supplied by overseas agencies and from original cataloguing by participants. The system can be used by participants to record holdings information, and to control ordering and acquisition of books. NZBN is now being extended throughout New Zealand. On-line terminals are expected to be placed In all main centres and many regional centres within 18 months. The NZBN system runs on IBM compatible mainframe equipment using MVS equivalent operating software. Teleprocessing support is via CICS and the DBMS used is ADABAS. Application programs are written primarily in PL/I and IBM assembler. Other principle software is: NATURAL for on-line system development TSO/SPF for development support SNA/SDLC for communications The data processing team will be charged with the support, control and enhancement of NZBN and the development of further related applications.
