Petrol impurities not to blame for pump problems
Parliamentary reporter Impurities in a shipment of Bahrain petrol did not cause recent vehicle petrol pump failures, according to the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch. D.S.I.R. tests he had commissioned had shown that an aromatic (hydrocarbon) content significantly lower than normal in the petrol might have causdd some petrol pumps to fail, albeit temporarily. ZZ Z-':
The D.S.I.R. had found that when New Zealand refined petrol was passed through a petrol pump which had previously been leaking while using Bahrain petrol, the pump worked normally again, he said. The shipment of Bahrain petrol had been imported during October to help overcome the petrol supply problems which had resulted from the September fire at the Marsden •Point refinery.
