Legal aid

Sir,—A letter printed today compared legal aid in China with that in New Zealand. It may be of interest to your readers to know that the range of legal aid payments made by Christchurch courts this year varied from $26.50 to $5OOO a case. Fees paid in the District Court, Christchurch, in the last year amounted to $149,802, and in the High Court $62,601.40. A Justice Department publication, the Final Report of the Working Party on Access to the Law, 1983, recognises that there is need for review of criminal legal aid. — Yours, etc., R. B. TWIDLE, Registrar, District Court. December 9, 1983.

Sir, — After reading the letter of Messrs M. J. Knowles and W. Rosenberg one can only conclude that what the legal fraternity loses on the swings, it gains on the roundabouts. I am a co-trustee in an estate. A Companies Office

investigator ordered the solicitor for a liquidator to invite me to join an action being taken by two major investors in a company (now in liquidation) to recover money owed them. He did, but the fee estimated to recover $2OOO was $2OOO. — Yours, etc., S. L. DONALDSON. December 9, 1983.
