Sir Keith Holyoake
Sir,—lt is a pity that New Zealand has not produced more politicians like Keith Holyoake. One is surprised that, when asked what he thought his greatest achievement was, he replied that it was winning four elections in a row. Surely it is not winning power but what one does with power that is important. He could have boasted of having achieved, while in office, the lowest level of unemployment for any noncommunist country. He could have mentioned his policy towards the Commonwealth versus Indonesia war. I argued, in letters to him, that New Zealand should aim for good relations with Indonesia in the long term and that he should therefore
vigorously oppose the bombing of Indonesia that was being called for by British military men. The Prime Minister at first disagreed, then agreed with me, and even went so far as to visit Indonesia to talk during the war. — Yours, etc.,
MARK D. SADLER. December 9, 1983.
