Tasmania wants $S0M for dam
NZPA-AAP Hobart Tasmania has claimed sAustso.BM (SNZ7I.I2M) compensation from the Federal Government for work already done on the cancelled Gordon-below-Frank-lin dam.
The claim replies to the request of the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, for a detailed submission outlining the costs incurred on the project by the state Hydro-Electric Commission.
The claim covers spending on investigation and project design for the dam on the lower Gordon and Franklin catchments, plus expenditure on construction of the Gordon River Power Development Stage 2. After a hard-fought campaign against the dam by conservationists and opposition from the Federal Government, the High Court ruled on July 1 that the Commonwealth had the power to stop the dam.
