Fiji minister quits
NZPA Suva, Fiji Fiji’s Minister of Finance, Mr Charles Walker, quit his portfolio over a row with the Prime Minister and other Cabinet colleagues on a pay claim by civil servants.
Mr Walker, who had been tipped as a likely successor to the Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, refused to discuss his resignation yesterday.
The Prime Minister said he was shocked by the resignation and would like to have Mr Walker back in the Cabinet but felt that the Acting Minister for Finance, Mosese Qionibaravi, who is also the Minister for Tourism, should have a go at Finance.
Mr Walker, aged 55, was appointed Finance 'Minister in 1979, when Sir Charles Stinson retired.
