One million Z cars
Nissan has produced more than a million of its “Z” cars to notch up a world record for any single type of sports car. “Z” is a name given to the now famous range of sports cars produced by Nissan since 1959 and sold under such names as Fairlady, Fairlady Z, 240 Z, 260 Z and 280 Z.
The Fairlady was developed as an export model, but domestic demand was such that in October 1962 production of the 1500 cu cm Fairlady was increased to cater for the Japanese domestic market. It gained popularity as Japan’s first mass-produced sports car and in 1967 a 2litre version was introduced.
Two years later the distinctive long-nosed 240 Z appeared in world markets. It has been followed by the 260 Z and the 280 Z. It is a line that has been carefully refined during the last 12 years and, with the increasing demand for high performance cars, the current top-of-the-range “Z” is powered by a turbocharged 171.5 kW (230bhp) engine.
