New ferry to leave
The Railways Corporation’s new $45 million inter-island ferry the Arahura, is expected to leave Denmark for New Zealand this week. She will be crewed by New Zealanders on the delivery voyage, which is expected to take about a month. Built in Aalborg, the Arahura is 146 metres long, bigger than the Aratiki (127 metres), and the Aramoana (112 metres). The Aramoana was laid up earlier this year, having spent 20 years on the Cook Strait run as New Zealand’s first passenger, rail, and car ferry. She cost $2 million to build. The Arahanga and the Aratiki will be taken out of service early next year for a refit. A. decision will then be made on the future of the other Cook Strait ferry, the Aranui. It has been suggested that the 17-year-old Aranui might also be retired. The Arahua is due to go into, service on December 21. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (6.45 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (S.C.N.Z.).
