Mr Crockett at union meeting

Mr Errol Crockett attended the half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Clerical Workers’ Union in Christchurch last evening.

Mr Crockett had been denied membership of the union and had taken up his grievance with the Human Rights Commission, which had referred the case to the Arbitration Court, which heard it last week and reserved decision on whether the union was in breach of the Human Rights Commission Act. Mr Crockett was assistant

secretary of the union but lost the post after a row with the former secretary, Mrs Doreen Shannon, who resigned last week. He paid his subscription to the union on Monday and was allowed into last evening’s meeting on producing the receipt. Earlier this week Mr Crockett had said that the union would have to admit him because he had satisfied union rules, and that if it refused him entry it would have to call the police to eject him.
