Consumer act studied
PA Wellington Misleading consumer information is dealt with in plans to update legislation, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, has said. Specific proposals for amending the Consumer Information Act also cover product safety requirements, Mr Templeton said in Parliament. He said he was considering the proposals. Mrs M. A. Hercus (Lab., Lyttelton), the Opposition’s spokesman on consumer affairs, had asked the Minister what action he intended to take over comments from the Consumer Council. The council had reported that the act “lacks strength, and ‘effective restraints on misleading and dishonest trade descriptions are required without further delay,” she said.
