Faulty petrol?
PA Wellington Many cars in the Wellington area have broken down in the last two weeks because of faults in their petrol pumps. Dealers suggested that the internal diaphragms or valves in the pumps might be collapsing. The faults had been unofficially linked to a possibly contaminated batch of imported petrol, said the Automobile Association yesterday. Breakdowns were also reported in the South Island and other parts of New Zealand. The association warned its patrols to expect an upsurge in the number of vehicle breakdowns. The fault was first noticed by Wellington vehicle parts dealers, who said there had been an extraordinary increase in sales of replacement petrol pumps selling at about $4O each.
