Twizel decision unchanged
Parliamentary reporter The Government will not revoke its decision to house permanent electricity staff at Omarama even though Twizel now seems to have a permanent future. The Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, replying to a question in Parliament by Sir Basil Arthur (Lab., Timaru), said that Omarama was still the best location. Twizel’s long-term future was still uncertain and that could create staff recruitment problems if it were the site of permanent staff. The Mackenzie County Council had not yet finally committed itself to the development of Twizel, he said, and staff could still be placed at either Twizel or Omarama. But the sparse population a round Twizel and its uncertain future meant that Omarama was still the best location, and there was no reason to revoke the earlier decision.
