Open government
Sir,—Members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery are to be congratulated on the choice of the Coalition for Open Government as recipient for the New Zealand Communicator Award. The Prime Minister chooses to label the Coalition as anti-Government and anti-establish-ment. In fact the eight individuals concerned are no extreme radicals nor is the collective itself antiGovernment or anti-officialdom. It is its mode of operation that is criticised. It is a sad commentary on our times that the Coalition, formed in 1979 as an answer to the National Development Act, is just as relevant and necessary today notwithstanding the existence of the Official Information Act, which should have been the signal for its demise. — Yours, etc.,
ERIC BENNETT. November 7, 1983.
