Guy Fawkes
Sir,—Your editorial sounds, like the carping of a tired, geriatric somnambulant who wishes only to be left alone in his silent suburb, so ordered and predictable that he vegetates, occasionally waving agitated stems when some stimulus dares to disturb the suburban hush. Your thinking will lead us into a grey, quiet world. Instead, the
community must take every opportunity to provide adventure, festivity and celebration for its people, involving risk, creating differences, expressing individuality. Guy Fawkes Day is such an occasion. As children we anticipated it with feverish excitement, warning the neighbourhood of its approach with 100 pranks that left letter boxes smoking and young girls dancing. It was a wonderful time unparalleled by any other season.—Yours, etc.,
A. C. WATSON. November 4, 1983.
