Censure bid disallowed
PA Wellington An Opposition move to censure a Government backbencher who allegedly threw a submission at a union official giving evidence to a select committee was disallowed by the Speaker, Sir Richard Harrison, in Parliament yesterday. Sir Richard told the House that the events referred to in a notice of motion on Thursday by Mr F. M. Gerbic (Onehunga) occurred in the committee as part of its proceedings and the motion was, therefore, out of order.
Events in a select committee cannot be referred to in Parliament until the committee has reported back to the House or -the committee ’ has passed a resolution asking for a Speaker’s ruling on some part of its investigations. Mr Gerbic had tried to move a notice of motion against the Government member for Whangarei, Mr J. A. Banks, for his conduct in the select committee studying the Industrial Law Reform Bill. Opposition members have also claimed that Mr Banks called the union official a “turkey.”
