General forecast: A depression and its associated cold front should move east over the South Island with some heavy falls of rain on the West Coast and in Marlborough and Nelson. District forecasts: Canterbury: Strong, gusty north-westerlies inland and fresh north-easterlies predominating on the coast; cloudy with rain about the Alps; warm. Marlborough: North-wester-lies, gale force about the Sounds and strong at times elsewhere; periods of rain.

Nelson, Buller: Strong northerlies decreasing

later, rain easing. Westland: Rain easing from the south; winds tending north-west and moderating. Tomorrow: Showers in Canterbury and Marlborough, clearing elsewhere; southerlies. Extended range forecast for the South Island for Monday to Wednesday: Mainly fine at first; rain developing in the west on Tuesday, spreading elsewhere on Wednesday; temperatures rising to several degrees above average in the east and south by Wednesday, but dropping in the south later.
