Parliamentary reporter More than 10 per cent of the 775,000 families in New Zealand have only one parent, according to Statistics Department estimates. The 1981 census showed a figure of 11.6 per cent (89,960), according to the Minister of Statistics, Mr Falloon.

Where a family was defined as “a couple” with or without never-married children of any age, or “one parent” with never-married children of any age, 75,330 were led by a female and 14,630 led by a male.

There had been 15,330 one-parent families led by a female who was the sole recipient of an income of the household. He said “income” was defined as Social Welfare income plus income from other sources such as wages and interest.
