Hat-picked chairman

PA Whangarei The luck of the draw has given the Bay of Islands County Council a new chairman. Mr Michael Gross gained the position after his name was drawn out of a hat, deposing the sitting chairman, Mr John McPherson.

They both received six votes in the election for the post. The impasse was solved after a “Northern Advocate” reporter, Rick McCall, drew a name from a hat.

Mr McPherson had been chairman for 4% years and a member of the council for 18 years.
