Student job-search co-ordinator resigns
A Christchurch student job-search co-ordinator based at the University of Canterbury, Ms Janet Borette, has resigned. She is the third co-ordinator within four months to leave the job. Ms Borette said yesterday that she had handed in her resignation two weeks ago because she was unhappy with the project’s administration.
Ms Borette’s move comes after the resignation in August of another co-ordina-tor, Miss Deborah Chetwin, and the dismissal in July of Ms Jill Cotton.
“I am fed up and frustrated with the whole pro-
gramme,” Ms Borette said. The project was well behind schedule because of the lack of communication and administration of its management committee, she said.
Although the management committee consisted of representatives of the Christchurch Teachers’ College,
Christchurch Polytechnic, Lincoln College, and University of Canterbury Students’ Association (U.C.S.A.) it was administered by the Canterbury association, she said. Ms Borette said the project’s accounts were handled by U.C.S.A. and the management committee was chaired and controlled by the president of U.C.S.A., Mr Tony Gray.
“I have tried hard not to let the students down, but under the circumstances I cannot do mv job,” she said. Because of delays Ms Borette said she had encouraged students to look for their own jobs.
“I hope there will be jobs there for students when they finish next week, but there are nowhere near as many as last year,” she said. Mr Gray would not comment last evening on Ms Borette’s resignation. However, he said her resignation would not affect the job search project. “Everything is going along nicely in preparation for the start of summer," he said.
The two remaining coordinators, Ms Jill Shield and Mrs Norma HamlynHall, were working “extremely well," Mr Gray said.
