Head injuries suffered

A woman driver suffered head injuries when her car careered into a pile of concrete blocks in Mairehau Road, Burwood, yesterday afternoon.

The blocks had been left stacked at the roadside to build a fence outside the home of Mrs R. Afitu, at 390 Mairehau Road. Mrs Afitu said she had been at the back of her house soon after 2 p.m. yesterday when she heard “a big bang.”

“I went out and there was the car in the blocks. The woman was unconscious,” she said.

Mrs Afitu telephoned for an ambulance and the woman was taken to Christchurch Hospital with “moderate to serious” head injuries, according to a St John Ambulance spokesman. The woman’s name and condition were not available from the hospital last evening.
