Sex education in schools
Sir, — Regarding the current debate between the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, and the Auckland synod over the teaching of human relationships in school, the Christian faith is to do with every aspect of human life. People cannot be separated into a religious component and a secular component. We applaud the Auckland diocese for its concerned discussion and action over the social and emotional needs of so many younger folk. We also echo its highlighting of the need for a greater awareness and understanding of human relationships and sexuality in our community, and the possible role of schools in this area. Mr Wellington may think the debate is over, but the need has not disappeared. It seems a shame that , the Minister is so reluctant to talk with groups that can offer him support, time and energy feedback involvement and expertise in his very demanding portfolio. —
Yours, etc., BRUCE S. BALL. Senior social workers and seven others. October 19, 1983.
Sir, — Sex education is schools is still talked about after six years and not only in the churches. Mr Wellington’s verbal blast is another example of arrogance shown by a Government too long in power for its own good or ours. Though the home is the best place for sex instruction, it is not being done by the few with the moral ' courage to take their responsibili-
ties seriously. Instead of handing our too-powerful Prime Minister another diversion to occupy our minds, S.P.U.C. should campaign for continuing education classes for parents too timid or careless to do what is their job. Children already born are not finding their place in society and need help. How dare Mr Wellington criticise our free speech! He is not Sir Oracle, uttering the veiled threat, “When I ope my lips, let no dog bark.” — Yours, etc.,
A. M. COATES. October 20, 1983.
